ΘΕΜΑ: Διεθνές εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα "World Class Scholars"

Σας γνωστοποιούμε ότι ο οργανισμός Enνision South Carolina διοργανώνει το πρόγραμμα "World Class Scholars".

World Class Scholars

What it is- How it works- How to Get Started

Thank you for your interest in our World Class Scholars partnership. This memo outlines the basic information about Worid Class Schoiars: what it is, how it works and how schools can get invalved.

What is World Class Scholars?- World Class Scholars (WCS) is a free, reai time, online student-exchange program partnering schools and students Ιη South Carolina with other schools and students around the world.

The project enables students to establlsh personal relationships, learn together about the world around them and possibly win scholarship money and other valuable prizes. World Class Scholars is a project of Envision South Carolina, aπ innovative initiative to make South Carolina "world class and globally connected."

How does it work?- The basic concept of WCS Ιs a three-step process:

Connect- Via the lnternet, teachers, students and classes will connect with other students around the world and establish global learning partnership, thus building real, direct, personal relationships with others of their age;

Learn- Each student and class will work with their global partners and each week have a "class lesson" and joint projects where they learn something about each other's countries, lives and the world around them;

Share- Once completed, the classes and students will share their class lessons and joint projects with others- worldwide on the WSC website, with others in their schools and in their local communities.

What does it cost to particlpate?- WSC is free to the schools both in South Carolina and their global partner schools. The WSC project is organized with South Carolina school districts in partnership with various sponsoring business, organization and private sponsors. Generally, aπ international business or other organization will sponsor one South Carolina school district and also serve as a link to international schools in the company's home country. WSC is open to every student in South Carolina and their global partner schools.

What do the students learn with WCS?- The WSC project is designed to help students learn the skills they need to work and be competitive in the interconnected global marketplace of the 21'' century. Students will: 1) learn to use new technology effectively; 2) work collaboratively with others of different countries; and 3) connect to people, cultures and ideas in the wider world around them. WSC is designed around set of standard formats and templates that can be used by Κ-12 teachers and students of any age in·anγ
academic subject area.

What languages are used?- The initial WSC class partnership will be conducted in English. Το the maχimum eχtent possible, all classes will be encouraged to try and learn some basic vocabulary of their international partners beyond English. ln some cases other languages can be used. For eχample, a German language class in South Carolina will be partnering with a school in Germany and their class room session will be in German. Whatever arrangements both partner teachers and schools want to make is fine.

What technology is required?.- The most basic technology needed is: 1) a computer with lnternet access, and 2) a web cam. Α simple web cam can be purchased at a local computer store for under US$50. lt is good if a projector and screen or a connected white board is available so that the classroom images are projected in a large format. All schools will use the Google Hangout platform for connecting and communicating among teachers and students. We are currently in the process of developing a special World Class Scholars webslte where classes can upload their class projects and record all the classroom activities.

How important are the classroom teachers?- Teachers are ΚΕΥ to the success of this project. The classroom teachers will work together to develop the common study materials and iead and direct the WCS projects. The general rule is that teachers should work together to find common subjects and projects to do together. Whatever the teachers agree on is fine, as they know best what their students can do and are interested ίη learning.

ls there someone who will help us get started? ls there a Handbook and other training materlals? • Yes, each partnership will be led in the initial stages by a WCS Coach, who will work with both partner schools to get the project up and running. The Coach will work with the classroom teachers via Google Hangout sessions and email, Each teacher will have a 20+ page Handbook that is an easy to use, step-by-step guide to setting up and running a WSC classroom project.

How long does it take to get started? · Generally, the two partner teachers in South Carolina and globally will have four to sίχ planning and discussion sessions among themselves prior to going live in the classrooms. The WSC Coach will help with these sessions and this usually takes 4 to 5 weeks. During this time that the teachers are planning, the students in each class·are researching and studying about their partner county and the location of their school partners. Once the teacher preparation is complete, the two classrooms begin their live weekly sessions. The Handbook has all the information needed and a sample τιme Line is include at the end of this memo.

How does the actually class room exchange work? What is involved? ·Teachers and classes will be encouraged to develop their own class activities but generally we suggest a regularly scheduled 60-75 minute session once a week. Α typical classroom session would include:

1. Greetings and Personal News (10 minutes)- about what has recently happened in the life of the classes and students over the last week, special events, birthdays, etc.

2. Country News and Events (10 minutes)- sharing about things that have happened in their larger community or country, such as holidays, current events, cultural activities, etc.

3. The "Ciass Lesson" (20 minutes) • the two classes alternate taking the lead in presenting a lesson, such as a science project, a geography or history lesson, the sharing of cultural or national customs, etc.

4. Lesson Discussion (10 minutes)- where students share ideas and insights from the lesson as

5. Assignments for Next Week (5 minutes)- classes preview neχt week's lesson.

This "Class Lesson" seems important. Exactly what is it? - During the "Ciass Lesson" section of the class sessions, the video interchanges between the students and the materials used by the classes will be archiνed via the World Class 5cholars website. Thus, each lesson will be packaged into a standard template format and shared online with other teachers, classes and students around the world. Over time, WCS will build a huge archive of lesson templates and materials that any teacher and class can use. Think of this as each "Ciass Lesson" becomes like a Wikipedia page that is added to, improved and expanded as more and more teachers and classes put up their "Ciass Lessons." We expect to eventually have thousands of "Ciass lessons" online in a wide variety of subjects, age level, languages, etc.

The plan calls for the classes to have an οnlίne session every week; what if we cannot meet this often? Each school partnership will determine what is best for them. ldeally, the classes will connect once a week, usually at the same time for about an hour. lf classes want to connect ever two weeks, or more than once a week, this is fine. We have found that it is best if the classes meet at least once a month

What ls the "Class Project" and how do the studeπts work together directly?- Each class partnership designs and develops a special "Class Project"- something that they do together toward the end of the school year once they have been working together a while. This "Class Project" can be about anything that both classes want to work ση. lt can be a video, power point presentation, a hands on project- anything that the students like and develop together. Once it is completed, the classes share their project with
others in their class, in their communities, and with the world, via the WSC website.

What is the "Special Global Celebration Event" at the end of the program? Meeting new people, making friends around the world and learning together is cause for celebration. And working together on a joint Class Project is something to be proud σf and show to others. Students will invite their family and others in the community to the live online Celebration Event. These guests will meet the students' new friends, see what they have done and learned together and celebrate and share what has been accomplished.

Is there a reward for students that participate? Yes, there will be. At the end Όf the school year, all students in South Carolina and globally who participate will receive an Envision SC World Class Scholars Diploma. Plans are underway to develop a variety of scholarships and other prizes, including trips to visit  students in their partner schools. We will provide more information on this in the future.

lt looks llke the project is designed for a nine month school year, is there a set time that we must begin the program? Νο, schools can join the WSC program at any point ίn the school year. Obviously, it works best if there is time to fully implement the program with οne class all the way through, but it can easlly be carried over from one school year to the next. lt's best if the teachers start working on the project about 2-3 months before the school year begins to establish the plan before the students begin school.

ls there more to come with World Class Scholars? Yes, absolutely. We are in the early stages of developing this exclting new project and we are learning as we go. However, given our clear vision, our success to date, and our strong world-class partners, we are convinced that World Class Scholars will quickly ramp up across the globe.

Who are the ldeal partner schools? We are looking for innovative and creative teachers and schools, as well as other early-stage partners, to join us in a spirit of adventure and experimentation. Together we will build a truly important global resource for the students of the world- to enable them to "connect, learn and share" about the world around them and their place in it.

This seems very easy and inteiesting fόr st"Udents and teachers alike, How do I get started? Just send us an email and we will be back in contact and get things started.
